One Breast-feed Does Not Bring About Prohibition
Question :
My mother informed me that I was breast-fed one time by a woman whose daughter I wish to marry; is it permissible for me to marry this daughter?
Answer:
In order for prohibition to be brought about, the breast- feedings must take place five times or more, while the child is still in the first two years of life. If it is less than this, then it does not bring about prohibition. This is based upon the saying of the Prophet ﷺ:
"Feed Salim five times and you will be forbidden to him."
And, the Hadith confirmed from 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, in which she said: "It was revealed in the Qur'an that ten known breast-feedings caused prohibition, then it was abrogated by five known breast-feedings. Then the Prophet ﷺ died and the matter remained thus." Narrated by Muslim in his Sahih, and At-Tirmithi in his Jami' [Sunan], and this is his wording.
And, the saying of the Prophet ﷺ :
"There is no breast-feeding, except in the (first) two years." And Allah is the Granter of success.
