The Prophet in ramadan

The guidance of the Prophet in ramadan 2

All scholars agreed that Muslims must learn the faith and the worship from two main sources which are: The Quran and Sunnah. There are numerous scholars who have collected many hadiths of the prophet (SAW), and decided that the most legitimate two are Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

We as scholars face a problem with some ignorant people who have no knowledge of the book of Allah or the Sunnah of the prophet (SAW) and neglect some authentic Hadiths whether their thinking or doesn't make sense to the source is from Al Bukhari or Muslim, because it doesn't match.

We learned from our scholars that when we see an authentic hadith which doesn't make sense to us we must find fault with our knowledge not the Hadith. We may not understand the Hadith but the scholars understand it as Allah says: "above the knowledgeable one is the most knowledgeable".

We are anticipating the month of Ramadan to begin this Tuesday or Wednesday insha Allah according to the announcement of Saudi Arabia whom we have decided to follow.

Allah (SWT) says: (O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become pious* [Observing Saum (fasts)] for a fixed number of days, but if any of you is ill or on a journey, the same number (should be made up) from other days. And as for those who can fast with difficulty, they have (a choice either to fast or) to feed a Miskin (poor person) (for every day). But whoever does good of his own accord, it is better for him. And that you fast, it is better for you if only you know. ).

In todays khutba I will share some of the good deeds that the prophet (SAW) used to do during the month of Ramadan and during fasting.

1- Have a sincere intention.
Sincere intention is one of the conditions of fasting and prayer. According to the Sunnah of the prophet (SAW) every action depends on an intention. Muslims must intend to fast at night before Fajr.According to the hadith, whoever doesn't intend fasting before fajr, his fasting will not be counted and he has to make up another day after the month of Ramadan). having Suhoor before fajr is an intention.

Also you can have one intention in the beginning of the month of Ramadan, but when you you stop your fasting because of a trip or sickness, you must once again renew the intention.

2- Having Suhoor late and breaking fast immediately after Azan. It is the sunna of the prophet (SAW) to eat before fajr for two reasons:

  1. To have energy for fasting.

  2. to perform Fajr prayer on time at the Mosque. The prophet (SAW) said: (eating Sohoor is a blessing) and said: (my Ummah will remain good since they eat sohoor before Fajr and eat Iftar after Maghrib). It is good to attend the prayer at the Mosque if you are close to the Mosque; but if your city does not have a Mosque or you are so far that you would miss praying on time, you should pray with your family to gain the reward of Jama'a prayer.

  3. Eat dates, or drink milk or water and supplicate to Allah. The prophet (SAW) preferred to start his iftar with a fresh date, if there were none, he would eat a regular dates. If there were no dates, he would drink some milk, and if there was no milk, he used to start with water then he (SAW) would supplicate to Allah with this special Du'a: "o Allah, I have fasted for your pleasure, and on your provision I begin to eat. Thirst is gone, my energy is renewed through my veins, and the rewards are guaranteed by Allah's will). Then you can make any Du'a for yourself, for your family and Muslims.

  4. reciting Quran. The prophet used to review the Quran with Jibril once a year during the month of Ramadan and he (SAW) reviewed Quran twice during the last Ramadan before his death. It is an invitation for us to read and memorise Quran during the month of Ramadan.

  5. Taraweeh (night prayer).
It is a sunnah to pray the night prayer right after Isha prayer during the month of Ramadan. It is better for Muslims to pray in Jama'a at the Mosque. After a long day of work and fasting, we break fast, pray maghrib and isha and sleep, losing the sweetness of praying taraweeh prayer. The prophet (SAW) said: (whoever prays taraweeh prayer for the sake of Allah, Allah will certainly forgive his past sins).

  6. protect your fasting from evil action and false talking. "When any one of you is observing Saum (fasting), he should neither indulge in obscene language nor should he raise his voice; and if anyone reviles him or tries to argue with him he should say: "I am fasting".
