Sufficient for us is Allah

✨Sufficient for us is Allah

There is a phrase that…If uttered, it resonates within the souls. And beyond this world, do the souls become attached. It is The cry when adversities intensify. And it is The refuge when concerns magnify. And it is the phrase at the tip of the tongue when fear and sorrow take seat in the heart. And it is the phrase when worldly means are cut off.

Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs

How grand is its meaning! And great is its significance! And how powerful is its effect!

Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs

It is a way of life that we follow. And we hold on to it in all cases. It is our strength before material power and worldly means.

Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs

It is our solace if our wealth is scarce and our materials and resources are sparse.

It is our sanctuary if anxiety and worry overwhelm. There is no power except His power. There is no strength except His strength. There is no will except His will.

Allah is sufficient for us

Is a phrase of seeking refuge by which a person feels Allah’s name Al Haseeb which means The Sufficient. For He the Exalted is sufficient for whoever relies on Him and entrusts his affairs to Him. Allah is sufficient for His servant for what concerns him of harm and for what he desires of good.

[He is] the best Disposer of affairs

That is He is the maintainer of all our affairs. Carrying out our interests. Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy upon him) said: That is, Allah alone is sufficient for all of us.

Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs

A firm belief that means that the servant relies on his Lord. And turns to Him. And is in complete need of His help, relief, assistance and success.

If harm touches us or our power diminishes, we will not be let down by our hopes in our Lord. Allah is sufficient for us in all our affairs. To Him we raise our complaints and to Him we invoke. To Him alone do we turn to remove our distress. And on only the Merciful do we rely. So we call on Him and knock on the door of His mercy. For He is the hope when all roads are closed.

Who knew their Lord the greatest and turned to Him the most? Who most entrusted their affairs to their Creator and were the most steadfast? They were the Messengers of Allah. The chosen among His creation. The best of His servants. So by looking at their lives as narrated in the Quran we can see the strength of their attachment to Allah alone. And sending their complaints to their Lord was their cry. And during their lives they were exposed to many trials and tribulations. However, they did not turn left or right. Rather their foreheads were turned to the sky. Yearning for relief and a way out and for the hardship to be lifted.

Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs

Ibrahim, peace be upon him, was steadfast in calling his people to worship Allah alone and leave their idols. As they refused and decided to eliminate the threat to their idols. They carried him to cast him into a massive and unbearable fire. His was filled with Tawhid (Divine unity) and his tongue repeated:
Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs

Then Allah said:
Al Anbiya (21) 69: O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham.

Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs

For many years Noah called his people to worship Allah alone. In return, he was scorned, rebuked and harassed. To the point that he lost hope in his people. So he turned to his Lord in supplication. Allah said of him:
Al Qamr 9-10: (9) And they denied Our servant and said, “A madman,” and he was repelled. (10) So he invoked his Lord, “Indeed, I am overpowered, so help.”

And Allah Almighty said:
As Saffat (37) 76: And We saved him and his family from the great affliction.

Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs

And when Musa and his people were escaping Pharoah, they reached the edge of the sea. As it seemed that there was no way out, with Pharoah behind them and the sea in front of them, his people exclaimed out of despair:
As Shu’rah (26) 61: Indeed, we are to be overtaken!

And Musa, peace be upon him, said and his heart was filled with attachment to his Lord and certainty:
As Shu’rah (26) 62: “No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me.”

And Allah Almighty said:
As Saffat 114-115: (114) And We did certainly confer favor upon Moses and Aaron. (115) And We saved them and their people from the great affliction

Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs

And Yunus, peace be upon him, rode in the overladen ship. To lighten the load so the ship would not sink, the passengers decided to draw lots to determine who would be thrown off the ship. Yunus’ lot was drawn and he was cast into the depths of the sea. In an instant light became dark and it was if day became night. In this most dire situation, Yunus turned to his Lord in glorifying Him and repenting:
Al Anbiya (21) 87-88: (87) And he called out within the darknesses, “There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.” (88) So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.

Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs

Prophet Ayyub was an extremely wealthy man and had many children. An illness overtook Prophet Ayyub that was so severe that of his limbs only his tongue was free from disease. He lost his children and his whole family except his wife. His condition persisted for so long and started taking a toll on his wife who was supporting him. So when all doors closed but the Merciful’s, he supplicated to the Lord of the earth and heavens:
Al Anbiya (21) 83:”Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the most merciful of the merciful.”

Then Allah said:
Al Anbiya (21) 84: So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity.

Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs

And the Prophet Jacob, peace be upon him, was hurt by the loss of Yusuf and he lost his sight because of the sorrow that he was suppressing. From the many supplications he made to his Lord, Allah cooled the pain of his separation from his son Yusuf. And the pain of his anguish and sorrow left him. And Yusuf, peace be upon him, was tried when the lady of the house tried to seduce him and subjected to all kinds of temptations. He was only saved by his attachment to Allah and supplicating to Him:
Yusuf 33: And if You do not avert from me their plan, I might incline toward them and [thus] be of the ignorant.”

Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs

After the battle of Uhud the Prophet ﷺ returned to Madinah. They heard that Abu Sufyan with the polytheists were returning to Madinah. In spite of the heavy physical toll that the battle of Uhud had inflicted on the Muslims they exited Madina to meet the polytheists. To scare them it was said to the Muslims:
Al Imran (3) 173: Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them.

In this difficult situation the Prophet ﷺ and his companions said:
Al Imran (3) 173-174: (173) Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.(174) So they returned with favor from Allah and bounty, no harm having touched them. And they pursued the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.

Peace be upon our beloved Prophet and all of the Prophets of Allah. Their hearts were attached to Allah with hope and fear. They were with Allah, so Allah was with them.

Oh believers:Turning to Allah and attachment to Him is not just during adversities. Rather it is recommended when requesting good matters, benefits and interests. Allah Almighty said:
At Tawbah 59: If only they had been satisfied with what Allah and His Messenger gave them and said, “Sufficient for us is Allah; Allah will give us of His bounty, and [so will] His Messenger; indeed, we are desirous toward Allah,”

And Allah mentioned internalizing the phrase “Sufficient for us is Allah” in these two cases – seeking good or repelling evil – in the verse:
Az Zumar (39) 38: Say, “Then have you considered what you invoke besides Allah? If Allah intended me harm, are they removers of His harm; or if He intended me mercy, are they withholders of His mercy?” Say, “Sufficient for me is Allah; upon Him [alone] rely the [wise] reliers.”

Oh Muslims: Attachment to Allah is a principle on which the Prophet ﷺ trained his companions (may Allah be pleased with them). And their souls were purified through this pure creed.

The Prophet ﷺ trained all his companions to be attached to Allah in spite of their varying ages. He said to his companion and friend Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, while he was overwhelmed by sorrow in the cave:
At Tawbah (9) 40: Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us.

And he said to the youth Muath bin Jabal:
Be conscious of Allah wherever you are

And he advised the young lad Ibn Abbas:
Know Allah in times of ease and prosperity, and He will remember you in times of adversity.

Attachment to Allah is proof of Iman (faith) in Allah alone. It revives lukewarm will. And it awakens neglectful souls.

If the hearts are attached to the strength and power of the Knower of the unseen. Then everything became insignificant and weak except for His power and strength. If the hearts seek refuge in their Lord, they will feel the supremacy of Allah. For nothing happens in the universe without His knowledge, power and will.

And those who rely on Allah and entrust their affairs to Him are worthy of Allah’s love:
Al Imran (3) 159: Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].

And whoever relies on Allah, then His Lord will safeguard and suffice him:
At Talaq (65) 3: And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him.

Indeed attachment to Allah is honor, glory and dignity while attachment to other than Allah is weakness, disgrace and humility. And the stronger the attachment to Allah the more the honor, glory and dignity in this world and in the hereafter.

So let us increase our attachment with our Creator by loving, fearing and placing our hope in Him. And by carrying out his commands and avoiding his prohibitions. And let us turn to Allah alone at times of adversity and prosperity.

We ask Allah Almighty to increase our attachment to Him and illuminate our hearts with Iman (faith). Indeed Allah is All Hearing, Answering.
