The Ruling on Marrying a Fifth When the Fourth is Mentally III
Question :
If a man is married to four women and one of them was afflicted by mental illness, is it permissible for him to marry another woman while the ill one is alive, or is she forbidden to him because she is the fifth of them?
Answer:
It is not permissible for him to marry more than four, even if one of them is afflicted by mental illness or anything else, or even if all of them were ill, as long as he has four wives. This is according to the generality of the evidences and the forbiddance of combining more than four wives.
