Taking A Salary Or A Stipend For Reciting the Qur'an

Question :

Some people recite the Qur'an for a salary or for a price; is this permitted?

Answer:

According to the correct view of the scholars, one is permitted to take a salary if by reciting, one is teaching others to read the Qur'an. This is due to an authentic Hadith in which one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah read the Qur'an over a sick person for some wealth, and later on the Messenger of Allah said :
"Indeed, the most rightful task for which you take a salary is Allah's Book "

Recorded by Al-Bukhari, may Allah have mercy upon him, in his Sahih.

But in the case where one recites, not for educational purposes, but merely for people to listen to on any given occasion, it is not permissible to take wages. Concerning this last ruling, Shaykh- Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said that he knew of no disagreement among the scholars for its prohibition.
